March Gladness

Here we are at the end of March, and my guess is that no one is too sad to see it go. Sure, college basketball fans will have to find a new way to waste large amounts of time and energy, but, rest assured, the spectator class will find another diversion to keep it occupied. If anything, though, the weather was a good excuse to stay sedentary and glued to the screen. However...April is upon us, and along with its closest sibling, May, it is one of the finest months to drop a paddle in the water. With warm, dry days, and cool, temperate nights, it's also an ideal month for kayak camping. Combining camping and kayaking may, at first glance seem odd. With a little planning and creativity, however, kayak camping can make for a unique, enjoyable outdoor experience. In the next couple of articles, I'll be highlighting both gear as well as ways to make for a safe, and fun kayak camping experience. We'll start with the basics, and work our way up from there. Almost any kayak can be used for camping. The overriding consideration becomes, what do you plan to bring on board? It's not just our technology that's getting smaller, camping gear has dropped in both size and weight. With backpacking in mind, gear manufacturers have been producing scaled down tents, sleeping bags, stoves, and chairs. What's been good for backpackers has been good for kayak campers also. Kayak camping also provides access to areas not accessible by car or larger boat. For those looking for a more a secluded camping spot, kayaking provides a way to find that location. Next time around we will take a closer look at gear that makes kayak camping a comfortable and relaxing experience.
