On Black Friday

It was Black Friday, and I was far from scoring any discounted shopping specials. I was kayak camping with a buddy on Keg Island. We arrived at River Road Park that afternoon to find only a few folks fishing off the pier. Otherwise, the park was nearly deserted. Considering the holiday and temperate weather, I had thought things might be busier. It was an easy paddle over to Keg and we set up camp. It appeared we had the island to ourselves. We paddled back out to pick up some fire wood and do some exploring. We encountered a few other paddlers between Keg and Shark's Tooth Island, but for the most part we were alone. We made our way along Campbell Island and landed at another camping spot located on a bluff above the river. Looking East it provided panoramic views of the river and the mainland. With the sun dropping fast, we re-launched and rode the tide back to our campsite. As we paddled back, Shane laughed and said, "this sure beats camping in a Best Buy or Target parking lot." I most certainly agreed. No matter how steep the discount or incredible the product, it couldn't beat an evening paddle with the sun setting over the Cape Fear River. With the camp fire lit, we sat back and enjoyed the view as a sunset bloomed orange, pink and yellow above the water.
