Power to the Paddle

Here we are at the end of June, and we have been having a nice break from the typical heat and humidity of a Southeastern, NC summer. While guiding a group through the Zeke's Island Preserve, I was reminded of the accessibility of paddling. There were multiple groups putting in and taking out at the public boat access. There was a paddle club, a day camp, and several groups on an outfitted and guided tour. The demographic was all over the place, with different ages, experience levels, and a wide range boats. The basin was as calm as a lake, and the tides were up, providing excellent paddle conditions. In short, it was an ideal summer morning to be out on a small boat. Paddling really is the great equalizer, in that you don't have to be super fit, have a ton of experience, or a lot of money to do it. Paddling is the aquatic equivalent of riding a bike. Once you get the hang of it, it's a skill you can maintain for a life time.
